Parents and the School:

Parents play an important role in the success of their child at school and we regard ourselves as being in partnership with them. Our first hope is that parents will get to know the school and particularly the teachers responsible for their child.

Secondly, that they will provide the situation at home in which their child is able to work.

Thirdly, that they will feel confidence in the school and have a positive attitude towards their child’s learning.

In all partnerships it is important that both parties are regularly in contact with each other. We provide a number of ways of doing this:

Parent’s Consultation Evenings which give an opportunity to talk with the child’s subject teachers.

Partnership Evenings aimed at sharing information appropriate to different stages in a child’s school career.

Written reports giving specific details on aptitude and progress.

Meetings in connection with the choice of subjects for Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form.

The regular Newsletter to parents.

Open invitations to attend Open Days, sporting events, plays and concerts and Communion services.

In addition, when need arises, we ask parents to come to school to talk about particular concerns that we might have. In the same way, we are pleased to see parents at school when they feel that a matter needs to be raised more urgently than can be done through the regular pattern of meetings.

Activities and Charges:

Activities at Saint George’s School include day trips, sports and music outings, and residential visits to places at home and abroad. Some trips may be made outside school hours. Prior to a trip being organised the school informs parents about the nature of the proposed activity and asks what support there is for it. The price is stated in this first letter. Where no contribution is forthcoming a pupil will not be excluded from the activity if it is part of schoolwork. On receipt of parents’ responses, the school decided whether it is financially viable to proceed further. Where it is well supported, a second letter is sent to parents giving further details of the trip, and the collection of monies goes ahead. For residential visits the cost includes travel, board and lodging and any excursions.

Where a residential visit is directly related to pupils’ examination work, the Governors will remit the residential charge to parents in receipt of income support or family credit. The Governing Body reserves the right to make a charge in the following circumstances for activities organised by the school:

When as a result of a pupil’s misbehaviour, school premises, books or equipment is broken, lost or damaged. Where a student fails to submit coursework or is absent from the examination without good reason or wishes to re-sit an examination and has not followed a further course of study in that subject.

Voluntary Contributions from Parents:

Governors invite each family with a pupil at the school to make a voluntary contribution each term. These funds are used to:

contribute to building works and refurbishment

run the school’s mini-bus provided by the School Association

provide additional transport for school teams

provide ‘extras’ for the school

support school visits and journeys

The range and quality of what is offered to pupils is very much enhanced by the contribution from parents. This school has a good record in the past for such parental support.

Saint George’s Association:

The Saint George’s Association exists as an organisation to enable the parents, teachers, former students and friends of the school to work together for the school. Fund-raising is an obvious source of support. In addition, the Association, through the members it elects to the Committee, provides parents with the opportunity to raise issues, to clarify school policies and provide the Head and the staff with a sounding of parental opinion.

The SGA organised a variety of fund-raising events to provide the school with equipment that falls outside the range of normal expenditure. Funds have been raised to buy a mini-bus, to purchase computers and to provide a video recorder.

Parents’ help in organising and supporting the events organised by the SGA is always welcome. The Annual General Meeting of the Association is held in the first half of the Autumn Term and it is hoped that the parents of pupils new to the school will take the opportunity of meeting other parents.
