We examine the students work at the end of the year when they sit 3 different papers: unit 1 - Foundation physics covers the work done at GCSE taking it into greater detail, topics covered include Forces,Energy, Electricity and Communications. unit 2 - Waves and Nuclear Physics covers the waves area (as implied by the title) but in much greater detail than GCSE, rarely touching on any of the previous work but going into areas of diffraction, spectra and then going into radioactivity and the physics of particles. unit 3 - this is a practical exam lasting 2 hours asking 3 questions. A2 is similar in the fact we wait until the end of the year to exam students. Another 3 modules are studied: unit 4 - Further Physics. This goes into the areas of circular motion, oscillations, gases, thermodynamics, capacitance, momentum and quantum phenomena unit 5 - Fields and their applications covers electrical, gravitational and magnetic fields, nuclear energy as well as the synoptic aspects of the course (exam is 2 hours long) unit 6 - another practical split into two 1.5 hour papers |
