Through the curriculum pupils are guided towards an understanding that active involvement in sport improves the quality of life of the individual by enhancing their physical and mental well being. In Years 7 – 9, pupils are taught a wide range of activities including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, gymnastics, health related fitness, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, tennis, trampoline (Year 9 only). It is hoped that by studying a range of activities pupils will develop a wide vocabulary of sports skills that will equip them for a lifetime’s involvement in sport. In Years 10 and 11, pupils can develop their skills further whilst being made increasingly aware of the opportunities for sport in the local community. New activities such as stoolball and volleyball are also introduced. Those pupils with a special interest in Physical Education can extend themselves further through GCSE. In the Sixth Form, pupils can study A/S Physical Education and continue into Year 13 to study A/2 Physical Education. Results in the years that the advanced course has been running have been excellent. Saint George’s offers a wide programme of sports activities to all pupils. Facilities are excellent, with a sports hall, gymnasium, health related fitness room and impressive sports fields. There is an extensive extra-curricular programme through which pupils have the opportunity to compete for the school in athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cross-country, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, swimming. Pupils with special ability are put forward for district and county trials. Extra-curricular matches take place between local schools, district competitions and county competitions. Saint George’s experiences success at all levels of competition.
