Numeracy / KS3 Strategy

In KS3 maths, lessons are structured in three sections:

1 Oral work and mental calculation whole class work to develop mental skills

2 The main teaching and pupil activities

3 Several plenaries throughout the lesson to emphasise and develop key facts and ideas with the whole class.

Oral work and mental calculation

Suggested ideas: · revise previous topics; · develop mental calculation strategies; · develop mental pictures of shapes and movements;

· review own learning; The main teaching input and pupil activities

In this part of the lesson we:

· make clear to the class what they will learn;

· make links to previous lessons;

· give pupils deadlines for completing activities;

· help individuals by questioning and support; · during paired work, encourage discussion and co-operation between pupils.

The Plenary sessions The plenary is an important part of the lesson, we use it to:

· ask pupils to self or peer mark an exercise, assess it informally and correct any errors;

· draw together what has been learned, summarising key facts, ideas and vocabulary;

· make links to other work and extend ideas and concepts.

Literacy

Writing

In writing, pupils are taught the correct spelling of mathematical words and use of appropriate punctuation and grammar. They can use the “plan” for mathematical investigations and coursework to enable them to complete each stage. The use of writing frames may be used to assist some pupils.

Speaking

When speaking, pupils are encouraged to use correct mathematical language to express their ideas and explain their answers.

Listening

Pupils are encouraged to listen to others, and to respond and build on their ideas and views constructively.

Reading

Pupils learn by reading examples from the textbook and then explaining the process to someone else.

St George’s Numeracy Summer School

aims to:

* Raise levels of achievement in mathematics

* Ease transition between primary and secondary school

* Increase confidence in mathematics through fun, games and activities based on real life situations.

St George's School has organised five successful Summer Numeracy Schools. Pupils participated in many activities designed to enjoy mathematics whilst boosting confidence and improving skills. Activities included: trips to Greenwich Observatory, London Zoo, France & Leeds Castle; Cookery, sport, barbecues, and orienteering.
