Support Programmes

In year 7 pupils are assessed and may be required to attend all or some of the Literacy Progress Units throughout the year. Pupils that find these units challenging may receive withdrawal tuition from their allocated Keyworker.

During years 8 and 9 small group withdrawal tuition is available and will be based on assessments taken at the end of year 7 & 8.

Due to the demands of the GCSE courses we are unable to offer withdrawal tuition in year 10 and 11. However, Keyworkers offer support after school and it will be the pupils responsibility to access this support as and when they require it.

Pupils in year 10 who undertake the single science option will access the ASDAN life skills qualification. This qualification is recognised by the relevant examining bodies.

Withdrawal Tuition

Tuition is arranged for small groups and individual students.

This usually takes place for one lesson per week. The student is taken out from a subject lesson for essential tuition to improve literacy and learning skills. We do not withdraw students from English, Maths or Science. (The exception to this is the new Literacy Progress programme for Year 7, see below.)

We run our tuition programmes in units of 6-8 weeks. Much of the focus is on how to learn. For example we teach different methods of learning spelling, how to plan and structure written work, how to proof read work. The programmes usually include work on memory and organisational skills. When their programme of tuition is complete they can (and do) come back for occasional help with work.

Most withdrawal programmes do not start until after the autumn half-term holiday.

Literacy Progress Units

The Literacy Progress Units have been issued by the DfES. This important work is provided for pupils who gained below Level 4 in their English SAT at the end of Year 6 and is aimed at boosting them to a level 4.

The students are withdrawn from two English lessons and one French lesson over the two week period. Extra time has been allocated to the English timetable to allow for literacy work.

The programme is delivered by Learning Support staff and the school librarians. Inclusion in the programme does not necessarily mean that students are on the AEN register as this is a whole school initiative.

If a child finds these units challenging their Keyorker/English teacher will be informed and an alternative provision will be looked into.

Their progress will be closely tracked. The Literacy Progress Units (LPUs)are designed by the DfES to assist Year 7 pupils to catch up on their literacy skills. This important work is provided for pupils who gained below Level 4 in their English SAT at the end of Year 6. Learning Support staff provide some of the tuition for the LPUs,along with the school librarians. All the work is carried out in liaison with the English Department. Pupils will come out of two English lessons and One French lesson over the two week period.
