The Additional Educational Needs Register

When a child is identified as having special or additional educational needs they are place on the AEN register. This is made available to all staff.

In the case of special educational needs, students are identified at different levels, according to the revised SEN Code of Practice. (The revised SEN Code is available from the Department for Education and Skills)

The identified stages or levels are:

School Action - this may involve just extra monitoring by school, or some form of additional support.

School Action Plus – the student has extra support in school, and additionally other agencies, such as the LEA support services, are involved.

Statement of SEN – the LEA has carried out a Statutory Assessment and agreed a statement.

How do we identify which students to include on the AEN register?

* At transfer to secondary school, the primary schools inform us about who should be included. We automatically transfer students from the primary school AEN register to our own.

* We also are given information about students who speak English as an Additional Language, and those who are ‘looked after’ by the Local Authority. By including these students in our AEN register we can ensure their progress is monitored and that additional support is given as needed.

* Later, a subject teacher or a member of the pastoral staff may refer a student for further assessment and support because they are not making expected progress.

In all cases we always inform parents/guardians when we include their child on the AEN register.

Also...

* Parents or guardians may speak to the department if they have a concern about their child.

A member of the AEN team will assess the child's needs. If it is judged that the child has additional educational needs we will place his or her name on the AEN register. Parents will be informed in writing and staff will also be notified.

* Students can call in to the AEN Office (room 32) and ask to speak to the AEN Keyworker for their Tutor Group.
