SPANISH COURSES

Spanish

Year 8

Spanish forms part of a carousel of “taster” courses in Year 8, each lasting about 9 or 10 weeks. Topics covered are: greetings, the alphabet, numbers 1-31, basic personal information (name, age, birthday), brothers & sisters, pets, colours, describing people. Pupils are expected to know the words for “a” and “the”, the rules governing endings on adjectives, and the Present Tense of ser and tener.

Year 9

Pupils who choose Spanish as their second foreign language in Year 9 start to do Theme 1 of their GCSE course, to help ease the pressure of covering all the syllabus ab initio in 2 years. Topics covered are:- school (school bag items, subjects, opinions), times & days, free time activities & destinations, house & home (addresses, compass directions, rooms in a house). Pupils are expected to know the Present Tense of regular verbs, radical-changing verbs, ir & estar, how to say “my”, “your” etc., understand infinitives and the gerund, use gustar and hay, and some prepositions.

KS4 / Years 10 & 11 The AQA GCSE course is the same as for French

KS5 / Sixth Form

Pupils have the opportunity to choose Spanish as one of their AS subjects, with the option of continuing with it at A2 if they wish. Pupils are required to develop the ability to express themselves more fully in the language, especially in terms of being able to reason and support an argument. The topics covered at AS are thus more abstract and advanced, and include family and relationships, leisure, health, work, media, and the Spanish-speaking world.
